A Birthday Letter for Joseph

Football Fanaticism: Love in Brotherhood

“How can someone spend half of his days talking, watching, arguing, and day dreaming about football? Which kind of stupidity is that?”

Kinda the truth though, most hardcore football fans spend long hours of their days on online Football Forum throwing banters (ManagingMadrid, Goal.com FB pages, Nairaland Football threads, and BBC Sport comment sections did it for me) and also offline if they have the chance. And yet, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, cos in my opinion, it is actually a good thing.

I’ve stanned Ronaldo (CR7) for most of my life, especially his rivalry with Messi/Barca fans. Witnessing him come from a 1-4 Balon d’Or handicap to a 5-5 stalemate (2018WC game vs Spain was probably the peak moment for a typical CR7 fanboy, 2016 Euro win a close second). Then to him leaving Madrid, getting old and washed, falling off to a 5-8 Balon d’Or final score, and now appreciating even the littlest flicks, stepovers, Siuuu, PK, or tap-ins in his GrandpaNaldo era😭.

Experience, they say, is the best Teacher. So learning from someone else's career experience, the lowest and the highest moments, is advantageous to us football fanatics. You tend to understand that failure is part of the journey, absorb criticism, and even become less prone to chopping heartbreak from typical 9ja girls cos you already faced worse than that (e.g 2014WC disaster of a tournament for CR7, Mourinho era UCL SF defeats, or multiple 5 goals trashing from Barca)😂.

Then as you grow older, adulting becomes the natural next step. You get to understand the need for not being a mere spectator in life, and chase your dreams by being an active player instead. So your football fanaticism reduces each passing season; slowly, until you suddenly find yourself barely watching 3 games a week. Or hardly having time to check Online Football Forums again.

I’m now in my “Adulting” phase. Football is no longer a religion to me; instead, it’s a luxurious hobby - which I squeeze out time from my weekly schedule to enjoy. But I will forever cherish my years of Football Fanatic Era, especially the people I share those moments with: my brothers, friends, secondary schoolmates, Uni hostel mates, neighbors, random strangers, and particularly my younger brother and probably the closest person to me (and favorite person?): Joseph “CJ”.

Thanks for those memories, my Junior Idolo and Agba Baller Isco๐Ÿค๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Happy Birthday, Brother! Happy Birthday, Joseph fvcking Orabuego!! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿฅณ
